According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, there are over 60 million Americans (that is 1 in 5 people!) who suffer from allergies. Eye allergies can be particularly challenging as there are triggers in both indoor and outdoor environments. Called "allergic conjunctivitis", and not contagious - the irritants can be cosmetics, pollen, mold, dust mites, pet dander or smoke. Symptoms can be eyes that are red, itchy, burning, tearing, swollen or gritty sensations. Often they parallel an itchy nose, sneezing, coughing or a sinus headache.
Many contact lens wearers opt for single use lenses as a healthy option. Others use prescribed eye drops. Prevention tips include: limiting rubbing of eyes, wash hands frequently, wash your linens weekly in warm water.
